Fessing up to a problem you’ve been having is never easy, especially to someone you don’t know. If you’ve been avoiding the dentist, going in for a regular checkup puts you in that exact situation. There’s no surprise that it’s daunting, or that people who haven’t gone to the dentist in a while have a problem booking an appointment.

However, no good dentist will judge you on the state of your teeth. There are some very good reasons why that’s the case; if you aren’t convinced, here are just a few.

Your Dentist Wants You to Be Comfortable

If you were a dentist, which type of patient would you want? Would you want one that A) is squirming, impatient, and who’s likely to lie to you, or B) a patient that is calm, receptive, and honest? The answer is pretty obvious—you’d want a more comfortable patient.

By judging you or making you feel bad, your dentist only makes you more likely to lie to them about your health, and to be ill at ease for the duration of your procedure. Even if you imagine your dentist to be an uncaring person, it’s worth remembering that being professional is in their best interest as well.

They Have a Job to Do

Most dentists are interested in learning a little bit about you as a person and in building a relationship, but when they see you, the main thing on their minds is how they’re can better your oral health. Crafting your treatment plan requires a lot of brain power, so the fact is that they’ll probably be too preoccupied to judge you.

They’ve Seen It All

To become a dentist in the United States, you have to go through years of dental school. You usually need a residency as well, meaning that most dentists you’re likely to see at their own practice have at least that much experience under their belt. That doesn’t even take into account how long your dentist has been practicing.

Your dentist is liable to tell you that they’ve seen it all, and they’re telling you the truth. Whether in a dental textbook or in person, they’ve almost certainly had experience with your issue.

As you can see, there isn’t any reason to worry that your dentist will judge you. You might still not be completely at ease, but hopefully, this guide gave you the confidence to give your dentist a chance.
